This tutorial will teach you how to make a basic moving avatar!

Firstly open up Flash, set the document settings as follows:

Modify > Document:

Now you'll need some kind of video

i recorded a video of my stickman on the webcam, after you have a video go file > import > import to stage

Follow the wizard and when you have the video import, resize it to 75 x 75 so that it fits the document

Now open up the movieclip and copy all the frames, go back to the root timeline and paste them again, delete the movieclip as you now have all the frames on the root layer.

now insert a layer (click the insert layer tool on the timeline)

on this layer add some text, this can be anything you wish!

to make this text stand out more, i recommend using the glow:

Play about with this movie, when you have it how you want it, go to control > test movie and run the movie to check how it looks

when it seems fine to you, go to file > export > export movie

now you will get a save window, the setting should be animated gif, call the movie whatever you like:

Now in all honesty you are best off using a decent quality SWF > GIF converter as I can never seem to find a settign on flash that has an amazing quality outcome when converting to gif, but the best match is with the settings as follows :

press ok.

and there you have your first animated gif!!
